STRONG sales of high-end smartphones are likely to have helped Samsung Electronics post a fresh record quarterly operating profit in the second quarter, momentum that analysts expect to continue even as the debt crisis in Europe weighs on global demand for consumer electronics.
Samsung, the world's largest seller of smartphones by units, said today it estimates second-quarter operating profit of between 6.5 trillion won ($5.7 billion) and 6.9 trillion won, compared with 3.75 trillion won a year earlier. Samsung's previous record-high quarterly profit was 5.85 trillion won in the first quarter of 2012.
